For seven years, we have been committed to “Shared Success.” The concept is simple: What can we do to make our distributors better and to help them be more successful. Their success, in turn, makes us more successful. It requires listening, sharing, and implementing ideas to serve them and their customers.

For the past four years, we’ve talked about “Shared Knowledge.” Shared Knowledge is our commitment to make as much information as possible available to our distributors via our website, our design database, and our past order database. This IP has proven to be invaluable to selling Classic exhibits to your clients. For example, many of the kits on Exhibit Design Search include links to the set-up instructions, graphic dim sheets, and photos of those kits (and variations of those kits).

Shared Knowledge University (SKU)

Now we are embarking on the next phase of this program: SKU — Shared Knowledge University. SKU is a comprehensive group training program at the Classic Exhibits facility in Portland Oregon, the first one will be held Monday and Tuesday, April 23rd and 24th.

Product training is not new to us. We average about one training session every three weeks, but those trainings have been small one-on-one sessions with a distributor and/or their sales team.

Shared Knowledge UniversitySKU is much the same, but also different. There will be 24 people from 10 companies for a group training schedule. The training promises to be comprehensive and intensive over two full days. It will include all the Classic Exhibits lines, as well as ClassicMODUL Aluminum Extrusion, Classic Rentals, Eco-Systems Sustainable Exhibits (by Eric Albery) and Optima Graphics (by David Brown).

The Eco-systems and Optima sessions will focus on their products and services and highlight how their companies partner with Classic Exhibits.

To say we are “excited” for Monday and Tuesday is to minimize how we are approaching these two days. Mel and I see it as our next step in supporting Shared Success.

For those attending, we look forward to seeing you and to having some good “off hours” fun as well. We are excited to show you what Portland offers during our dinner excursions.

For the rest of you, I will report back on the training and hope you will partake in this new program. We plan to make SKU a regular event three times a year. We will announce the next session soon, most likely in September.

New Outdoor Display Products Gallery

There’s a brand new gallery in EDS — Outdoor Display Products. This Optima Graphics gallery includes 11 popular outdoor products, such as Banshee, Kapow, Ridgeline, and Valet. There’s even a listing for Event Tents. As with many of the new features in EDS, the gallery was added at the request of several Classic Distributors. And the timing couldn’t be better with Spring at hand and Summer just a few months away. Our thanks to Gary Camarato at Optima for all his hard work on this gallery.

To make room for the Outdoor Displays gallery, we shifted Table Throws to the Banner Stand gallery, which has now been named Banner Stands / Table Throws. It contains the full selection from both categories.

Exhibit Specials and Red Tags

Exhibit Specials in Exhibit Design SearchYou may have noticed a “Red Tag” feature in EDS. About two weeks ago, we made it much easier to find our bimonthly Exhibit Specials. You could always find them in the Exhibit Specials Gallery. We’ve now added a visual “Red Tag” to the image whenever a product is on special. If the special includes a price discount, there will be a strike-through of the original price and a new red-line price. You’ll see the “Red Tag” specials both in the Exhibit Specials gallery and in the original “parent” gallery of the product(s). For example, select Visionary Designs inlines and islands and scroll down. You’ll see quite a few specials. These specials run through May 31.

Eco-Systems Sustainable Designs

Lastly, I want to give a pat on the back to Eco-systems Sustainable. Over the past two months, they have added lots and lots of new trade show display designs to the eSmart Display gallery. If you haven’t visited the gallery recently, I encourage you to take a stroll through their update offerings. Lots of cool designs whether your client wants an eco-friendly display or simply a modern hybrid design. We keep hearing from distributors that your customers are asking, “What’s new and fresh?” Take a look in the eSmart gallery.

An Exceptional Video from Display Supply and Lighting (DS&L)

Rob Cohen, from Display Supply and Lighting (a strategic partner of Classic Exhibits), sent us this video. It’s so well done that we just had to share. Here’s a summary what you’ll see, along with a little “smooth salesmanship” from Mr. Rob.

What did DS&L do at EXHIBITOR Show 2012? DS&L challenged attendees to THINK, IMAGINE, and CREATE what can be done with creative lighting products and design assistance from DS&L.

The focus of this video piece is on the back wall. This Classic Exhibits structure, covered with a tension fabric designed and produced by Optima Graphics (top and bottom pieces), was the centerpiece of this exhibit.

The top of the back wall was front lit with our new LED8822 arm lights. This is the highest light output LED arm light in the marketplace, providing the light equivalent output of a 125 watt halogen lamp. The fixture is a fully listed, ETL approved product with an integrated custom heat sink. The LED board uses all silicone coated diodes so there is no breakage of LED’s with this product when in transit. Compare this to anything else offered in the market and you will not find a better product.

The back wall contained two different lighting systems to demonstrate different ways of lighting the same exhibit property.

The first lighting system used our Flex product. These are programmable LED nodes on wires. Each individual node can be addressed by the controller and told what to do. As a result you get the ultimate flexibility in programming to really paint your canvas with programmable LED lighting.

The second lighting system used our linear Fuse product. The top and bottom of the lower graphic was lined with this linear, programmable product and you can see the smashing color changing, washing, and fading effects in this video.

Of course even more was being shown.  The four cubes in front were manufactured by Classic Exhibits and the graphic inserts were printed by Optima Graphics. Inside each cube, different color temperatures of white light were used to visually teach attendees the different effect that color temperatures have on illuminating an object. The far left was warm white products at 2700 degrees kelvin, the next cube was lit at 3500 degrees kelvin, the next was a neutral white 4100 degrees kelvin, and the far right cube was daylight at 6000 degrees kelvin.

Anyone who sells a product or provides a service will invariably get asked at some point, “Why aren’t your prices lower?” That’s a tough question because the answer isn’t always what the questioner wants to hear. Frankly, everyone thinks everyone else charges too much. It’s the nature of buying and selling.

At Classic Exhibits, we get asked that question from time to time. Typically, it’s by a distributor who’s competing against an online display website like www.sittinginmybathrobe.com or www.losingmoneywitheveryorder.com. Their prices are cheaper, sometimes significantly cheaper on basic products like pop ups, banner stands, etc.

We could apologize . . . but we won’t. We’re not selling products of similar quality and design or offering the same “take it or leave it” service.  So, why are our prices our prices?

1. Better Products. Better Designs. Whether it’s a hybrid display, a table top, or a pop up, our products are meant to survive a typical trade show schedule for years. In addition, they blend practical performance with upscale design and innovative accessories. We don’t copy. We create.

2. Customized Set-up Instructions. Except for a basic Quadro or Intro, every customer receives detailed, customized set-up instructions for their display, including individually numbered components. These instructions are available 24/7 as PDF downloads from the Classic website should they ever be lost or misplaced.

3. Customized Packaging. The thought of wrapping a display in bubble wrap and jamming it into a box gives us the heebie jeebies. Nearly every product is packaged in customized packaging which includes die-cut foam packaging for Sacagawea, Perfect 10, and Magellan. Even our crates are full lined with fabric and jigged for most components.

4. Complimentary Design. It’s a service you expect in order to be competitive.

5. Flexible Production. We build displays. We don’t just pull boxes from shelves. Building displays requires that you build to your client’s requirements, even if it starts with a basic kit. Our experienced production team averages eight years of service at Classic Exhibits.

6. Project Management. That’s an important concept. Our PM’s complete detailed CAD drawings, create graphic dim sheets, and manage the order from inception until it ships. They are responsible for approving the final product and working with you in a timely and professional manner. They are not clerks. They are project managers. None have fewer than four years of experience as a trade show PM. One has 20 years and another 10 years of experience.

7. Marketing. We’re not attempting to create a national brand by advertising in airline magazines or on random websites. We advertise a bit in some industry publications and support industry organizations like EDPA, TSEA, and participate in EXHIBITOR. Most of our marketing budget goes toward creating tools for distributors like Exhibit Design Search. And we offer this at a discount ($300) for an online tool that has cost Classic over $450,000 to develop and maintain. Why? We want to build your brand in your market. EDS is an effective tool for our distributors and for Classic, and it’s hope that it engenders loyalty and increased sales for everyone.

8. Made in the USA. This may or may not matter to you or your customers, but nearly all of our products are made and/or assembled in the United States.

9.  Reliable Partners. We are loyal to our partners, like Optima Graphics and Eco-Systems Sustainable. You expect consistency and quality from Classic Exhibits, and we expect the same from our vendor partners. That’s not always possible when you are always chasing the lowest prices just for the sake of the lowest prices.  It’s always possible to get something cheaper. And we are always researching better options, but not at the cost of quality or reliability.

10. We’re not Assholes. If we screw up, we fix it. We don’t ignore you, blame you, or gouge you. We fix it. If you make a mistake, we work with you. When it comes to prices, we refuse to play the “bait and switch” game. Our prices are clear with “includes” and “excludes” noted.  There’s no attempt to show the “full meal deal” but list a “dollar meal” price. Why play that game unless you know it’s the only way you can attract attention? Let face it. We all know a few companies who love to dangle the deal, only to jerk it back once you read the mouse print.

Yes, it’s true. We aren’t the cheapest, but we’re also not the most expensive compared to our competitors. We sit in the comfortable middle, providing high quality products, exceptional service, and remarkable design at a reasonable trade show price. It’s who we are. We’ll never compete with www.displaysinadoublewide.com, but it’s not our market or our customer. Nor, for the most part, is it yours.

Eco-systems Sustainable Exhibits: Milestones and Timeline

Milestones and Timeline

In just over four years, Eco-Systems has become the leader of innovative and sustainable exhibit products and practices. Eco-Systems offers customers high-quality “green” display options — from table tops to islands — through a network of over 90 certified distributors in North America.

The timeline below highlights many of the important events that have shaped Eco-Systems, including the development of many eco-friendly first materials and product lines.

January 2007: Eco-Systems Sustainable Exhibits is incorporated.

February 2007: Eco-Systems develops the first series of proprietary products to replace PVC (the most dangerous man made life-cycle plastic).

March 2007: Eco-Systems Sustainable Exhibits pioneers the nation’s first branded modular exhibit system built from LEED accredited materials at EXHIBITOR2007 in Las Vegas, thus creating a new “green” category in the exhibit industry.

March 2007: Eco-Systems stuns the industry with a coveted Buyer’s Choice Award at EXHIBITOR2007.

April 2007: Eco-Systems develops Eco-Poly Print Media, a 100% recycled plastic media for water-based print applications.

May 2007: Eco-Systems begins development of national distribution network.

August 2007: Eco-Systems further validates sustainable exhibit products with 1st Place Award in Best of the Best category at the TS2 Show.

February 2008: Eco-Systems begins development of Paradise Fabric, made from 100% recycled post-consumer soda bottles.

May 2008: EPA announces formation of Sustainable Green Meetings Standards writing initiative. Eco-Systems president Tim Morris is a key participant in activities.

June 2008: Eco-Systems enters into a joint-venture partnership with Classic Exhibits Inc. to take advantage of design, manufacturing, and distribution strengths.

September 2008: Eco-Systems partners with Optima Graphics to supply the trade show industry with Paradise Fabric and other green materials.

February 2009: Eco-Systems introduces Greencore, a biodegradable and printable substrate as an alternative to Sintra.

January 2010: Due to lower material costs and production efficiencies, Eco-Systems is able to drastically lower prices across the board.

June 2010: Eco-Systems and Classic Exhibits enter an equity partnership.

March 2011: Eco-Systems moves manufacturing facility to Portland, Oregon to take advantage of production synergies between Classic Exhibits and Eco-Systems.
