Final Days of 2012: Word on the Street — Dec. 24th thru Dec. 28th

December 30th, 2012 1 COMMENT
Final Days of 2012

Word on the Street by Kevin Carty

It’s almost over. Another great year . . . well mostly great. 🙂

As we all prepare to ring in 2013, I am working on the Annual State of the Company letter which will be emailed in the next two weeks. To be honest, this year was positive for so many reasons that the letter is taking some time to pull together.

2013 promises to be another excellent year for the Classic Family of Companies  — fiscal cliff or no fiscal cliff. In all honesty, we are concerned like you that our government can’t get its act together. But the first half of 2013 is going to be solid regardless we project.

Jay Leno put it best: “It’s 4 a.m. for our economy and Lindsay Lohan is behind the wheel.”

All that aside, we are confident about the New Year. Much of that comes from your comments and projections. January looks to be filled with new islands, inlines, and large rental projects for the upcoming spring show schedule.

We thank you all for the business in 2012 and the new business coming in early 2013. You are our lifeblood, and we appreciate your dedication to Classic Exhibits, Exhibits NW, Classic Rentals, and ClassicMODUL.

Cheers to a positive 2013. If you are a curious about upcoming trends, please take a few minutes to review “100 Things to Watch in 2013.”

Here is a funny to enjoy as you exit 2012. Hopefully this represents a little of all of us post-holiday feasting.

Be safe and have a terrific celebration this Monday and Tuesday.

Upcoming Events for The Classic Exhibits Family: Word on the Street — Sept. 10th thru Sept. 14th

Upcoming Events for The Classic Exhibits Family

Word on the Street by Kevin Carty

Not only is this “the busy” season, but this is also a busy time for events at Classic.

First, Club 815 Fundraiser

The time is finally here. The Fundraiser Ride for Mike and Janet Swartout is this Saturday, September 22. Yes, it’s the culmination of months of training, but more importantly, it’s the culmination of your tremendous support for Classic’s Design Director, Mike Swartout, who is battling cancer. Thanks to those who have been so very generous by contributing to the team that includes Joel Roy from Creative Dimension, Greg Garrett from Greg Garrett Designs, David Brown from Optima Graphics, Tony Ricci from Optima Graphics and his lovely wife Betsy, Mel White, Charlie Shivel and me from Classic, and my step-father Grant Murrell.

Your donations and support have been nothing short of humbling. Many have been asked us to resend the information so you can still donate. It certainly is not too late. Jut click this link to support our team. And remember to let us know if there is anyone in your life that we can ride “In Memory of” or “In Honor of” as we scale Mt. Hood next Saturday.

Special note to our team –Guys and Gal, I truly am honored by your participation and really look forward to spending a couple days together riding, hanging out, and recovering. It’s going to be fun. And I know I speak for Mike and Janet when I say “Thank You” for your inspiring willingness to take on this challenging event.

Shared Knowledge University (SKU)

After the ride, Shared Knowledge University starts at Classic Exhibits Monday morning September 24. The training will be two comprehensive days for experienced and new Classic Distributors.

Like the last SKU event, we will cover everything from product training to procedures to design to project management for Classic Exhibits, Classic Rentals, Eco-systems Sustainable, and ClassicMODUL.

Optima will be there to give a graphics presentation. And you will have the opportunity to spend time and meet all the Classic Exhibit employees that you work with everyday on the phone.

Like any event, it can’t all be work. 🙂 We have two evening events planned that the attendees will really like. Both located at very unique and very “Portland” venues.

To those who are registered, I am really looking forward to seeing you and showing why I think Classic Exhibits and its employees are simply the best.

A little teaser . . . To those distributors who have Exhibit Design Search on their website, expect BIG, BIG changes this week. The new EDS is done, Version 3.2. You can see it on Classic’s website now. It will appear on your website sometime this week. Expect a blog post from Mel in the next day or two detailing all the changes.  They are significant!

Hope you all have a great week ahead. Be well.

OK, So We Don’t Always Follow the Rules

July 10th, 2012 1 COMMENT

Perhaps we should be more corporate, more dignified. But that’s not our style. Heck, we’re the folks with the ongoing Urban Exhibitionary ads in EXHIBITOR Online. A few of those ads have struck an exposed nerve, like Showgasm and Bundling. Ouch!

Here’s our tongue in cheek “Help Wanted” ad in Exhibit City News for ClassicMODUL. This is for everyone who has worked with a temperamental co-worker, supplier, or customer.

Our thanks to the good folks at Exhibit City News for allowing us to break the rules and have a little fun. Thanks Kathy and Jeff!

Double Deck Extrusion Article in Exhibit City News

July 3rd, 2012 COMMENTS

Double Deck Extrusion Exhibits are Thriving

ClassicMODUL Double Deck

Exhibit City News recently interviewed three trusted sources in the extrusion industry to get a comprehensive look at double deck exhibits. Jim Shelman, General Manager of Classic Rentals, was the spokesperson for ClassicMODUL Aluminum Extrusions. The article begins below and then links to the full ECN article. Our thanks to ECN for asking us to participate.

Why are aluminum extrusions the perfect building material for double deck systems?

Jim Shelman, General Manager of Rentals, Classic Exhibits: Engineered aluminum extrusions are ideal for adding structural components; it is lightweight, packs efficiently and offers an appealing, contemporary look.

Chris Lake, COO, Highmark: Versatility, strength, and weight make aluminum extrusions ideal for the double deck system. By using the Highmark custom beam, column and hand rail extrusions, exhibitors can design and accessorize a multi-story double deck from Highmark’s current rental or new inventory.

How has demand for double deck systems been over the last year?

Tim Searle, President, Searle Exhibit Technologies: SET has experienced a dramatic increase in the demand for double decks over the past year for both new builds and rentals. For instance, summer is traditionally the slowest time for the exhibit industry, but the past few weeks, we have experienced multiple double deck quote requests most days, with a majority of them needed for summer tradeshows.

Shelman: We’ve seen a substantial increase in double deck rental inquiries and a 25 percent increase in booked rentals. Some of that has to do with the economy improving, but we’ve also benefited from having one deck permanently warehoused in Las Vegas. Often, that’s a major reason the client decides to go with a deck at a Las Vegas event: no shipping.
