Social Media Planning: What You Should Do in Q1 2011

Social Media Planning

Depending on what your company’s involvement is in social media, there are a number of approaches you can take to moving forward during the first quarter of 2011. And that’s the KEY: MOVING FORWARD from wherever you are at this moment. With the forward motion of all things social media, if you sit still you’ll get further and further behind!

If Your Company is NOT Doing Anything with Social Media

If you’re at the very beginning, you’ll have to start somewhere. Starting anywhere is better than not starting at all. Ask around the office, and look for your company’s own ‘digital native.’ This is the person that’s already online with social media. They’re already on Facebook and Twitter. They may be posting fun videos on YouTube or Facebook. Perhaps they’ve got a LinkedIn account. They’re adept at discussing and moving around in the social media world.

Once you find that person, sit down with your marketing manager and the company owner (presuming you’re a small or medium-sized company and have easy access to these people) and discuss the following steps:

  • Where you are
  • Where you want to go in the next 3 – 6 months
  • What tools you’ll need
  • Who will be in charge of the company’s social media efforts
  • How much time it will realistically take to set up accounts and start to build your community
  • What are your goals
  • What are the steps required to meet those goals
  • What other internal or external help you’ll need

At this point, you’re really doing a full assessment of where the company is in social media. Find out what your strengths are, where the holes are in your knowledge and determine the best way to fill those gaps. Here is where you’ll also be appointing someone (or two or three) that have the capabilities to lead the company’s social media efforts.

From here, look to what how you can start to create a community, stay in touch with them and provide them with information, content and response to their feedback.

Then, start: get the Facebook and Twitter accounts going, check in daily, put up links on your website to direct people to the new social media outposts. At the outset, once the accounts are set-up (should take a very short amount of time), the initial involvement might be a few minutes a day. As you see more of your community finding you, you’ll have more opportunity to ask questions, look for feedback and find ways to respond to their comments and questions.

If You Feel There’s a LOT More You Could be Doing

GET CREATIVE: If you’re past the first few baby steps described above, this is where you can start to get creative with your postings. Take note of what other companies that ‘get’ social media do. Riff off of their efforts. Come up with ways to creatively produce short videos that show the human side of your company, such as this one from gDiapers that was a video birthday present where employees described what they liked about their boss Kim.

Duck Duck Eagle

Word on the Street by Kevin Carty

Duck Duck War Eagle!

NO, I am not alluding to the child’s game of “Duck Duck Goose!” I am referring to Monday’s National Championship Game between the Oregon Ducks and the Auburn Tigers.

As you can probably imagine, the State of Oregon is all a buzz over the upcoming game. In my lifetime, I have never seen anything like it in this state. It’s great. And no matter what SEC fans say, this is not going to be some patsy team from the Pacific NW going to Glendale, Arizona to get crushed by the Auburn Tigers. NO, the Ducks are a legitimate Top 10 program in college football. If you are an objective fan of college football, you know that already.

Monday’s game will be an opportunity to finally set the record straight about the PAC 10, soon to be PAC 12. Win or loose, the game will be a close one, and the Oregon Ducks will serve the PAC 10 proud.

Now, I’m not one to want to give away free betting tips; however, this is a new year so I am going to share a free tip for you sports betters out there. You’ll want to remember this whether you bet through a Vegas sports book or you participate in a game day pool.

Elmer Cheney

Not many people know this, so please keep it to yourself.

Did you know that Dick Chaney is an avid Auburn Tigers football fan? Well, if you didn’t, you do now. And you are probably thinking, “what in the world does that have to do with anything?” Well, it’s really very simple . . . .

Dick Cheney is a hunter. In particular, he likes to hunt duck and pheasant. But as we all know based on his past adventures, he’s more likely to shoot a teammate (a.k.a., a fellow hunter) than a duck. Like Dick Cheney, look for the Auburn Tigers to shoot themselves in the foot and the mighty Oregon Ducks to prevail as victors in this Monday’s National Championship.

Also, be sure to enjoy watching Cam Newton in his final college game. If you had not heard, he has opted to take the HUGE pay cut and leave college for the NFL. Ha!!

Enjoy the game. In all seriousness, it should be a good. one.

GO DUCKS!!!

QUACK QUACK!!

2011 Global Trends

At the start of every New Year, the experts roll out their “trends” for the coming year. This one from JWT (J Walter Thompson) takes a global perspective on technology, media, consumerism, and social trends in alphabetical order. You may not agree with every one or even recognize others, but frankly, that’s half the fun. Enjoy!

2011 Trade Show Predictions

Word on the Street by Kevin Carty

Out with the Old and In with the New

This past week was filled with a flurry of new (albeit last minute) orders and lots of quote requests for the New Year. It was a promising sign heading into 2011.

Around Classic, talk was about what to expect in the first quarter of 2011 . . . internally and externally.

Mel and I have been in full blown planning mode for the past eight weeks, and this past week was no different. We have many things on tap for 2011, especially the first quarter. Along with the recent launching of the new SEGUE Sunrise, we are launching new variations of existing systems as well as multiple Island exhibits that reflect current “minimalist” trends and the growth of silicone edge graphics.

Along with that, we are refining our internal “customer experience.” Some examples include setting better expectations to make the overall process more predictable. The advent of tighter time lines, which have become the new “norm,” bring new challenges to our process. I am personally addressing many of these not only for you but also for our internal Project Management and Production Departments.

Pricing will receive some attention in the first quarter of 2011 as well. As many of you have probably seen in the financial markets, aluminum and plastic prices have slowly been on the rise. Does this mean an increase is pending from Classic Exhibits and ClassicMODUL? Yes in part, but we have been looking at more creative buying practices to control costs, so it will not be an across the board price increase. You will actually see some price decreases as well.

In the next few weeks, I will publish my Annual Company Letter. I am currently working on it and do not know the exact release date, but it will be in January.

I hope you and your families had a safe and happy New Year’s celebration. Be well.
