Eco-Systems Sustainable Exhibits Annual Letter

December 13th, 2013 1 COMMENT

This week, we’re sharing the Eco-Systems Sustainable Exhibits Annual Letter from Eric Albery, the VP of Marketing and Business Development. As many of you know, we have a manufacturing partnership with Eco-Systems. For those unfamiliar with Eco-Systems, we encourage you to visit eSmart Galleries in Exhibit Design Search or spend time on their website (www.ecosystemsdisplays.com).

Eric Albery, Eco-Systems Sustainable Exhibits

Annual Letter and Review

As 2013 comes to a close, it marks the seven year anniversary of Eco-Systems Sustainable Exhibits. Yes, seven years. We’ve come a long way as many of you know. After yet another amazing year, I want to share with you what we saw in 2013 and what to expect in 2014.

This year, I have been on the road visiting distributors more frequently, a trend that will continue in 2014. Those visits have been very beneficial – not only in conveying the goals and capabilities of Eco-Systems, but also in understanding your challenges and what you expect from a manufacturer. The overwhelming consensus is that design sells! That message is loud and clear. Our Design Department continues to be the centerpiece of Eco-Systems, as Lisa and Lauren continue to push the boundaries of exhibit design. Not a week goes by that I don’t hear positive comments about our designs, our designers, and our responsiveness to your client’s requests. Thank You!

One example is the “Kit to Custom” campaign, which showcases customized kits. You’ve told us time and time again that speed, accuracy, and free design services are invaluable in the sales process. We hear you. While other manufacturers make the customization process cumbersome and expensive, we don’t. We live for those opportunities.

I can’t say enough about our four year manufacturing partnership with Classic Exhibits. It allows us to be flexible on design, whether modular or custom, meet seemingly impossible lead times, and offer competitive pricing. Our “kit” offerings continue to grow, and many existing kits are being re-engineered to incorporate newer, lighter, and more innovative materials. All of these advancements and innovations ensure your client receives a better exhibiting experience at a lower price.

In 2014, Eco-Systems will continue to be the leader in sustainable exhibit technology and will continue to innovate state of the art materials and manufacturing processes. We hear from distributors that “sustainable” is no longer a want but an expectation, if the design and pricing is comparable. We have solved this issue and are now able to offer the most sustainable and innovative exhibit options on the market at the same price (or sometimes lower) than traditional displays. While some customers may not be asking for sustainable solutions, they are delighted when presented with designs that fit their exhibit marketing goals and are sustainable.

What Else Can You Expect from Eco-Systems in 2014?

  • A “New and Improved” Website.
  • EXHIBITOR2014. We’ll see you there!
  • Additional Green Graphic Options.
  • More Island and Rental Solutions.
  • And So Much More.

Last year was especially monumental for Eco-Systems as we increased sales, expanded design capabilities, and welcomed a host of new distributors. Our loyal and talented distribution network continues to be the lifeblood of Eco-Systems, and we appreciate your business and support. I speak for everyone here at Eco-Systems when I say “Thank You”. We look forward to working with you in 2014 and welcome your feedback and advice.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

If Puppies Ran Trade Shows and Events

October 31st, 2013 10 COMMENTS

Two months ago, I wrote “If Kittens Ran Trade Shows and Events.” It was meant to be lighthearted and playful. Looking back, I was naive, so naive. The puppy and dog lovers sent me emails within hours. They felt slighted. Why would kittens be better representatives of tradeshows and events than a cute Pekingese, a Beagle, or a Retriever? How could anyone presume to think that kittens were more “tradeshow-ish” than Muffin or Bandit or Killer? Wow! So, in the interest of fairness (and my personal safety) . . .

11 Reasons Why Our Lives Would be Better

No one would be a stranger.

Good behavior would be expected.

You would do whatever it takes to draw a crowd.

Good customers could expect loyalty and gratitude.

Competitors would be discouraged.

Children would be welcome at tradeshows and events.

Mistakes would happen but it would be OK.

For excellent service, just say my name. PLEASE SAY MY NAME!!!!

There would be fresh water and treats in every aisle.

Difficult customers would never be a problem.

AND . . . A pat on the head would make EVERYTHING BETTER.

Please add your own reasons in the Comments Section. And to the ferret, goldfish, and lizard owners, you’re on your own. I’m done. 😉

New Outdoor Display Products Gallery

March 28th, 2012 COMMENTS

Outdoor Display Products -- BansheeWe love to share good news about Exhibit Design Search.

There’s a brand new gallery in EDS — Outdoor Display Products. This Optima Graphics gallery includes 11 popular outdoor products, such as Banshee, Kapow, Ridgeline, and Valet. There’s even a listing for Event Tents. As with many of the new features in EDS, the gallery was added at the request of several Classic Distributors. And the timing couldn’t be better with Spring at hand and Summer just a few months away. Our thanks to Gary Camarato at Optima for all his hard work on this gallery.

To make room for the Outdoor Displays gallery, we shifted Table Throws to the Banner Stand gallery, which has now been named Banner Stands / Table Throws. It contains the full selection from both categories.

Exhibit Specials and Red Tags

Exhibit Specials in Exhibit Design SearchYou may have noticed a “Red Tag” feature in EDS. About two weeks ago, we made it much easier to find our bimonthly Exhibit Specials. You could always find them in the Exhibit Specials Gallery. We’ve now added a visual “Red Tag” to the image whenever a product is on special. If the special includes a price discount, there will be a strike-through of the original price and a new red-line price. You’ll see the “Red Tag” specials both in the Exhibit Specials gallery and in the original “parent” gallery of the product(s). For example, select Visionary Designs inlines and islands and scroll down. You’ll see quite a few specials. These specials run through May 31.

Eco-Systems Sustainable Designs

Lastly, I want to give a pat on the back to Eco-systems Sustainable. Over the past two months, they have added lots and lots of new trade show display designs to the eSmart Display gallery. If you haven’t visited the gallery recently, I encourage you to take a stroll through their update offerings. Lots of cool designs whether your client wants an eco-friendly display or simply a modern hybrid design. We keep hearing from distributors that your customers are asking, “What’s new and fresh?” Take a look in the eSmart gallery.

Trade Show Display Videos on YouTube

December 15th, 2011 COMMENTS

Trade Show Display Videos

For several years, Classic Exhibits has posted trade show display videos on our YouTube channel. It just makes sense. After all, we’re in a visual marketing medium so why not take advantage of videos. Most are product assembly animations showing Perfect 10, Magellan, SEGUE, Sacagawea . . . in addition to other Classic product lines.

In case you haven’t seen them, here are a few . . . all in the hopes of sparking comments about what videos you would like to see in the future.

Enjoy! And let us know what if there are any videos you would like us to create.

Perfect 10 Portable Hybrid Display

SEGUE Lightbox

SEGUE Sunrise Portable Display

Sacagawea PS Series Portable Hybrid Display

Aero Overhead Hanging Sign

Aero Portable Table Top

Quadro EO Pop Up Display

Classic Exhibits / ClassicMODUL Shop Tour

Finally, if you haven’t toured our facility, here’s a 10 minute “unscripted” video showing some of our production capability. The video is not narrated and excludes the offices, the rental division, exhibit storage, and our metal inventory. You’ll see examples of CNC metal bending, milling, assembly, and wood fabrication.

Trade Show Industry Predictions 2011 . . .

(Kevin Carty is on vacation, so Mel White has graciously agreed to substitute this week.)

As we head into the holidays, I thought I’d put on my clairvoyant hat and peer into a crystal ball. It doesn’t take a fortune teller to know that 2011 is already on your mind. You’re wondering if the exhibit industry will plod along like a Clydesdale, sprint like Quarter Horse, or remain stubborn and unpredictable like a mule.

To ensure my predictions are accurate, I’ve checked the astrological star charts, turned over the Tarot cards, and consulted the Magic 8 Ball. And to protect your sanity, I’ll spare you any doomsday or apocalyptic scenarios. Frankly, my psyche couldn’t handle it after the past two plus years.

Anyway . . . here goes.

Graphics – Many distributors survived on graphic orders in 2009 and 2010, a trend that’s unlikely to change in 2011 with 50% of your volume coming from new or replacement graphics. You will see, based on our trend the past nine months, more silicone edge graphics (SEG) in towers, inlines, and islands. We anticipate a continued downward pressure on basic systems graphics, such as pop up panels and banner stands, because there is no margin left in the hardware.

Table Tops – Oddly enough, table top orders tanked over the past 26 months, whether $400 or $2000 table tops. The budget TT’s have yet to show a pulse, but the higher priced units such as Aero are no longer on life support. We expect modest increases in TT orders with even an occasional multiple quantity order. You can’t make a living on TT’s, but when you get a multiple quantity order it’s a nice break from the Ramen noodles.

The Magic 8 Ball Says . . .

Banner Stands, Pop Ups, and Basic Curve Walls — No change. We don’t expect an increase in sales for these displays even as the economy improves. As more and more customers return to the market, we anticipate a more balanced approach between customers buying pop ups/banner stands and customers moving slightly upstream to hybrids. Many distributors have all but abandoned the entry level market where distributors (online or offline) are trading dollars. We would encourage you not to throw in the towel yet. There are still mainstream corporate clients who value quality at a fair price over the 30 feet or 30 second displays.

Until someone invents the “add one drop of water and poof you have a 10 ft. display,” many customers will still demand displays that require minimal effort even at the expense of marketing impact. If we believe the Marketing and HR Departments, the Sales AE’s at most companies are more likely to use an assembly tool for scratching and picking than for putting a display together.

Portable Hybrids and Modulars – Three years ago, there were few players in the $4000 to $8500 inline market. The field has gotten more crowded, but for inexplicable reasons, the players are repeating the mistakes of the pop up market. Lots of look-a-like displays with very little innovation. There are some exceptions in design and assembly (yes boys and girls, I’m talking about Classic), but by and large customers are being handed a bag of parts, a tool, and asked to assemble a square with two wings.

This segment will see double-digit growth in 2011, but distributors will have to decide whether to sell or to clerk. According to our distributors, sales conversations are migrating from price first and design second to a more balanced approach. We’re not quite back to the world of “I’ll find the money if I love the design,” but design is no longer playing second fiddle.

2011 Predictions

2011 Predictions

Over $10,000 Inlines – In our business, over $10,000 inlines are the “canary in the coal mine,” indicating whether there is an economic gas leak. Distributors will see more interest in >$10K designs in 2011 as clients talk more and more about what they need rather than what they can afford. Many will still decide to purchase a less expensive display, but others will invest in display solutions that more closely match their true marketing goals.

Islands – They’re back. (note the period rather than the exclamation mark) Unfortunately, islands may be the least profitable segment as the intersection between expectations and price points has shifted. Customers are willing to pay between $50,000 and $75,000 for a modular display, but they expect that to include EVERYTHING. Yikes. That’s a tough sell. More than any other segment, we’ll need to work together as partners to land these orders. Give and take is the key with both sides willing to take smaller margins or find creative solutions.

We’ve seen significant interest in SEG solutions in the past 6 months. In SEG islands, the graphics play a more dominant role in the design than the structure. Re-configurability will continue to be in the design mix, even if it compromises the overall design (sadly).

Rentals — Without question, rentals have been the biggest beneficiary of the economic downturn. We saw double-digit growth in both 2009 and 2010, particularly in island rentals. And if the past two months are any indication, this trend is unlikely to change. Customers are turning to rentals as cost-effective answers to purchasing an exhibit and to maintaining their trade show presence. We suspect that many companies have now made the decision to never own an island exhibit again. And it makes sense in many circumstances. Rental designs have gotten more flexible and imaginative. Gone are the days when a rental had all the sexiness of granny panties.

Green Displays — You may find this surprising, but requests for Green Displays never went away. Just ask our sister company Eco-systems Sustainable Exhibits. The price points may have dropped but not the interest. Companies with a green focus or with green initiatives will choose an eco-friendly display every time as long as the price is somewhat comparable. We caution you not to ignore this category. You must be able to speak the language to sell these products. These customers can spot a fraud a mile away. Now is the time to learn the language before you get schooled by a knowledgeable client.

What are your predictions for 2011? Click on the Leave a Comment link (at the top of the page) to share your thoughts with your Classic colleagues. We’d love to hear from you.

On behalf of the entire Classic Family, have a safe and relaxing Holiday.
