EDPA ACCESS: Complete Program Released 

The 58th Annual EDPA ACCESS conference full agenda has been released! Join your peers at the only executive conference for designers, builders and suppliers of exhibits and experiences for three days of learning, networking and growth.

This year’s agenda includes an exciting line-up of speakers and presenters who will be bringing you up-to date topics, the latest trends and best practices for evolving and growing your business in the exhibition and experience industry.

EDPA Access Review

Success! The one word that describes EDPA Access this year!

This year’s event was set at the beautiful J.W. Las Vegas Marriott Resort and Spa. It not only provided a beautiful setting, but also a nice venue for the Supplier Showcase, the networking events, and the conference sessions.

Kudos to everyone responsible for pulling the event together.

Day One started with the golf outing and the fishing event. While I did not participate in the fishing event, I heard it was very successful and that Lake Mead was beautiful. I did, however, participate in the golf outing and the TPC Las Vegas was quite the golf course. And congrats to Chris Clark playing in the group behind me. He hit a hole in one! Stealing away any chance for my “Closest to the Pin” prize. 🙂

Later that evening I had to leave the event, heading home early for the 5th birthday of my beautiful twins, but Mel, Reid, and Jim stayed to take in the rest of the event. And from their accounts and the accounts of countless others, it was the best EDPA Access ever.

Highlights included the Speed Networking Event. A cool idea in which, like speed dating, you get two minutes with another attendee to get to know one another and learn about their business. Several sessions focused on doing business with Chinese companies both in America and in Asia . Many attendees found these sessions very insightful with the growing trend of Chinese companies participating in shows in the States. At the Silent Auction benefiting the EDPA Foundation, I heard from organizers that they raised much more than they had expected. Thanks to all of you who helped out and donated. Overall education still remains the primary focus of the Access event and this year the curriculum as a whole was by far the best in recent history.

  • Designing and Installing Retail Experiences
  • Global Design Trends to Bet On

There was a terrific session moderated by Jay Burkette about “New Systems and the Hybrid Trend” which generated a lot of conversations about hybrid trends, the definition of “hybrid,” and whether aluminum extrusion is a fad or a long-term fixture in our industry.

Networking is always a big focus at EDPA Access. In addition to the golf and fishing outings, networking events included:

  • First-timer’s Reception
  • Welcome Reception
  • President’s Gala
  • Poolside Reception
  • Breakfast Roundtables

The only criticism I heard was that  the venue was too far from the Vegas Strip. And to that all I can say is . . . That’s the point!

On Tuesday afternoon, I attended the EDPA Board meeting. As a proud member of the board, I really appreciated the time we spent together reviewing what I can only say is a very healthy industry on a really positive growth pattern. Building quality partnerships with other associations both here in the States and in Europe and Asia to broaden the reach and depth of the EDPA and its members.

Thanks to all the Classic and ClassicMODUL distributors who came to this year’s event. I hope and trust that you found the event educational and beneficial for you and your organizations. You represent a very important and growing segment of the EDPA membership. Please share your experience with others who have been on the fence as it relates to attending this annual event.

Mark your calendars for next year. The meeting will be held in Palm Springs, CA at the Renaissance Resort and Spa the week after Thanksgiving. And it is sure to  even better than this year’s event.

And Why You Should Too

For several years now, Classic Exhibits Inc. has been a very active participant in EDPA and the EDPA Access event held every year. Proudly I might add. Often we are asked by distributors, vendors, and other service providers why we feel the event is so important. So I thought I would share the reasons why we go, in part to persuade those who have been on the fence about attending this year.

Education

Every year, EDPA puts a tremendous amount of effort into providing a relevant education program for attendees. This is not a simple task considering we all come from different segments of the industry: Display Designers and Producers, Freight Service providers, Lighting companies, Graphics providers, and Labor Service companies.

In years past, EDPA has tackled a diverse range of topics. Everything from Social Media to Bundling. This year is no different. Some highlights this year are “Building and Maintaining your Sales Pipeline” and “New Systems and the Hybrid Trend.”

Influence

We have always appreciated the opportunity to have a voice regarding the issues that we all encounter regardless of our business models.

For me personally, I am fortunate to have a seat on the EDPA Board where I sit with vendors, customers, and competitors alike helping to shape the direction of our industry as a whole.

Partnerships

EDPA at its core has always been the best opportunity for Classic to forge long-term relationships/partnerships. It’s the one time each year where the focus is less about the “show” and more about the “relationship and connections” with other industry leaders and business owners.

I often have said that we learn more about the pulse of the industry from EDPA than we do from EXHIBITOR and TS2 combined. There is not all the “selling” to worry about. Just an opportunity to speak openly and honestly about your business issues, successes, and failures. And to hear from others about the same.

Betterment for All

I truly believe that EDPA Access creates better experiences for our shared customers: the end-users that put food on all our plates.

I often wish we had more opportunities for our shared clients to be a fly on the wall at EDPA and for them to see the work we do to make their experiences better on the show floor. A few years back at EDPA, a guest speaker from a Fortune 500 company commented to me that she was truly impressed to see that our industry was addressing many of the issues that her company faced in trade show marketing.

EDPA Foundation Fundraiser

The foundation fundraiser is one of my personal favorites because I have seen what it accomplishes. The foundation provides educational scholarships as well as monetary assistance for those in times of distress or tragedy.

The Showcase

Classic Exhibits, like other EDPA members, also takes part in the Product Showcase. It’s less of a trade show, and more of a chance for members to familiarize themselves with what other members of EDPA provide. And it’s a great time to catch up with some old friends and meet new ones.

These are just some of my thoughts as to why Classic Exhibits attends. With that, I would be remiss if I did not mention that there has been one glaring void as it relates to the attendees of EDPA Access — Classic Distributors. I strongly encourage more of you to attend. In the past, EDPA was viewed more as a meeting for custom houses, labor providers, and freight companies. If that is still your impression, let me correct that impression. EDPA represents all segments of our industry. And in the past two years, we have seen more portable/modular owners attend, but even more are needed and would benefit from participating.

Remember you can always attend before joining.

Kevin Carty Elected to the EDPA Board of Directors

During the 2010 EDPA ACCESS meeting, Kevin Carty, Vice President of Sales for Classic Exhibits Inc., was welcomed as a newest elected member to the EDPA’s Board of Directors with an initial two-year term. Kevin and Classic Exhibits/ClassicMODUL are very active within the exhibit industry as members of not only EDPA but also TSEA (Trade Show Exhibitors Association) and HCEA (Healthcare Convention and Exhibitors Association) .

The Exhibit Designers and Producers Association (EDPA), founded in 1954, is an internationally recognized national trade association with more than 400 corporate members from 18 countries that are engaged in the design, manufacture, transport, installation, and service of displays and exhibits primarily for the exhibition and event industry. Its purpose is to provide education, leadership, and networking for the advancement of its members and the exhibition industry. The mission of the EDPA is to advance the interests of members engaged in the design, production, and service of exhibits, events, and experiential environments. The success and integrity of our industry will be enhanced through advocacy, communication, education, and good works.

EDPA leadership and guidance comprises of an Executive Board and a Board of Directors (a total of 24 volunteers from within the industry), one of whom is the Executive Director of the Association. Only qualified individuals who are representatives of members in good standing of EDPA are eligible for nomination. Board members are elected by the membership at large through an electronic balloting process with newly elected members being announced at EDPA’s annual ACCESS Conference and Showcase. Nominations are brought forth by the Executive Committee, contacted and vetted by the Vice President of Administration then presented on a ballot to the membership.
