Why Blog? What Bloggers Say.

October 23rd, 2012 COMMENTS

Why Blog?

We’re often asked by Classic Exhibits Distributors about the benefits of blogging:  “Isn’t it time consuming? How do you decide on topics? How often should I submit posts?” I have a hard time answering those questions because the answer is, “It depends.” I ask them if they enjoy writing about our trade shows and events, or if they feel they have something to share about sales, marketing, or small business. They do, even if they don’t realize it. That’s the first reason to blog. Everything else is frosting on the cake.

Blogging may seem a little old fashion compared to Facebook and Twitter, but it’s not. Good content (and the catharsis that comes from writing) is important. So why should you do it? I did a search on “Why Blog?” You might enjoy the answers, along with links to the original posts. Enjoy.

Build Trust

People are skeptical. They are skeptical about strangers on the street and they are even more skeptical about strangers on the internet. A blog with consistent, truthful and helpful content will allow you to bridge that gap between distrust to trust.

Growing Stream of Organic Search Traffic

It’s hard to think that anybody would doubt the benefits of blogging to improving your organic search engine efforts, which in turns drives more traffic to your site, but in case there are any unbelievers out there…here’s the evidence:  people who’ve blogged five times in the last 7 days will get 6.9 times more search traffic.

http://www.searchenginejournal.com/7-reasons-why-blogging-is-still-important-in-2012/39225/

But influence may be the grandest reason to blog. Garnering influence means building an online voice and thought leadership with every word you write, and every piece of content that you would share online.

Writing Leads to Understanding

Blogging forces you to write down your arguments and assumptions.  This is the single biggest reason to do it, and I think it alone makes it worth it.

When you move from your head to “paper,” a lot of the hand-waveyness goes away and you are left to really defend your position to yourself.

Town Call Review: Word on the Street — July 23rd thru July 27th

July 29th, 2012 2 COMMENTS
Town Call Meeting

Word on the Street by Kevin Carty

Classic’s Town Call

With July almost past, I am beginning to question where summer has gone. In Oregon, it doesn’t begin until July 5. I’ve heard Mel’s wife refer to June in the Pacific Northwest as “Junuary.” Very true, particularly this year.

Well, with August around the corner, we are already in full blown busy mode. Lots and lots of designing and quoting for fall shows. Thank you very much for the new opportunities both large and small, kits and custom. From what we’ve seen, some amazing work lies ahead in the coming months.

Our sincere thanks to those distributors who attended our first Classic Town Call on Thursday. We had a very good crowd and plenty of questions. As with any new initiative, we were a little nervous, but based on your feedback, we are excited to continue this format following the end of each quarter. With each one, we’ll refine the presentation and the message.

For those who missed the call, here is a link on YouTube to the recording of the call.

Those who joined us heard about the market trends we’ve seen in the first six months of 2012,  such as:

  • Retail. More Retail Display projects, both prototypes and production runs
  • Custom. More and more true “Custom Elements” whether as standalone projects or as components of kits both inline and islands
  • Silicone Edge Graphics. SEG is not only here to stay, but it’s also becoming a “standard.” Classic is bending as many TSP profiles for SEG graphics as possible, much to the chagrin of our Production crew 🙂
  • Personnel. New Additions to the Classic Family of Employees to handle your sales growth
  • Research and Development. New Products coming such as more iPad Kiosks, and many new products that were added in the first half of the year
  • Rentals. Custom Rentals have not slowed as Purchase sales have increased. Rentals are up 20% YTD, on top of the increases over the past four years. Lots of hybrid island rentals
  • ClassicMODUL. We’re opening another regional depot in the next 45 days and if you haven’t checked the prices lately at CM . . . you should. They’ve gone down on many common profiles.

Well, I hope you take a few minutes to check out the Town Call recording and please let us know what you think. How can we make this quarterly Town Hall meeting with you even better in the future. We  want your thoughts and your constructive criticism.

For now, I am back to painting my house. Some idiot (ME) thought that this could be done in two days. Which makes sense if each day was 64 hours long.

Be well and have a great week ahead.

EXHIBITOR 2012…What a SHOW!: Word on the Street — March 5th thru March 9th

EXHIBITOR 2012...What a SHOW!

Word on the Street by Kevin Carty

Goosies!

To steal a phrase from J-LO (yes, I said J-LO) . . .  EXHIBITOR 2012 gave me goosies! 🙂

Let’s start on March 5 at 11:30 am. Normally the Classic Crew would be standing in the booth waiting for the doors to open and for the first attendees to arrive. But we weren’t! We weren’t because starting at 10:30 am we already had other exhibitors in our booth looking around, admiring the Classic Exhibits booth, and eager to learn about what we were showing this year. To be totally honest, neither Mel nor I noticed when the show opened because we were busy from 10:30 – 3:30 non-stop.

The Booth

This year’s booth was designed to show all aspects of our business. In the past, we have succeeded in showing slices of what we do at Classic Exhibits — portables, custom modular, rentals, extrusion. But we have never been able to actually show it all. So this year, we handed that design challenge to Mike Swartout and Erik Frost. And man did they deliver!  Our exhibit showed how well we can build Island Hybrids, probably the first thing you noticed when seeing the exhibit. But it also highlighted our capabilities within ClassicMODUL Aluminum Extrusions, such as our one-of-a-kind bending capabilities of TSP profiles for SEG graphics. It also illustrated our extensive custom rental offerings. But the cherry on the top was the elevated retail display windows showcasing four hybrid displays:  Sacagawea, Perfect 10, SEGUE, and Visionary Designs.

Again, to Mike and Erik, very well done! And to our graphic designers at Flying High Creative Resources, thank you for nailing the “Be Better” theme throughout the booth. Like I said in the beginning of this post, the comments by visitors and friends regarding how we really hit a home run on the design not only made me very proud but also gave me goosebumps.

The show overall was solid this year. Kudos to John Pavek and crew from EXHIBITOR. You did a wonderful job putting together this year’s show. I did not hear a single negative comment regarding any aspect of the event. For Classic and crew it was just another year where we left the show feeling very proud to be part of EXHIBITOR.

Walking the floor proved to be a real challenge this year I must admit. Post show, we all compared notes and neither Mel, Jim, Reid nor I was actually able to see the entire show floor because we were so busy. But, for me, on Wednesday I had the privilege to work the EDPA booth for an hour. The booth was on the other side of the hall, so walking to and from the booth I took different routes just so I could see some of the other exhibits along the way. Everyone looked very good, and considering it was Wednesday, it was great to see exhibitors engaged with customers which is not always the story on the last day.

Other “Classic Exhibits” on the Show Floor

For the past several years, Classic has been very proud to help design and to build portions or all of the exhibits for many of our tightest vendor partners. This year was no different. This year we built the ClassicMODUL portion of Optima Graphics exhibit, the CORT Furnishings Island Exhibit, the New Leads 10 x 20 Sacagawea, The Immersive Realities 10 x 10 rental, the EXHIBITOR 10 x 20 Visionary Designs rental, the DS&L 10 x 20, and the ELITeXPO 10 x 20 Custom Visionary Designs Hybrid. I mention that unit last because it deserves special recognition. Thanks to Dave Mihalik and his whole team for really showing off what we do at Classic! It was an amazing structure with more curves than a county road in Eastern Kentucky. There were several other ClassicMODUL Aluminum Extrusion structures at the show as well, designed and built by custom houses. We can’t take any credit for these, except to personally thank them for choosing ClassicMODUL (which we did at the show).

Old Friends and New Friends

As in past years, it was wonderful to see you. It’s always such a great time and reminder of the great partnerships and friendships we have made over the years. For me, it’s always an opportunity to connect with many of the friends I have met over the past seventeen plus years. This year was no different.

Part of that came during our Annual Distributor Appreciation Event, held this year in the Vista Suite in Mandalay Bay in conjunction with Eco-Systems Sustainable Exhibits. We had 200-250 people come through the afternoon and evening. It was a lot of fun to see you and to meet some of the new faces we have working with over the past year.

Exhibitor 2012 Classic Exhibits Inc.

On a personal note, after missing the show last year, it was exhilarating to be back on the show floor and to see those folks who have been so supportive over the past year. Reid, Mel, Jim and I always say, “At the end of the day, we want to do business with friends.” We are very fortunate and blessed to be able to do so daily. So “THANK YOU!” to those customers and vendor partners we saw over the past week. Along with our great staff, you make Classic Exhibits a great place to come to work to everyday.

One final thanks to Tim Patterson and Marlys Arnold for contributing their knowledge and time to our booth this year. We would not have been as successful without your pre-show marketing and in-booth contributions. We appreciate and thank you for all you did.

I am curious to hear your experiences and thoughts about EXHIBITOR 2012. Please share.

Be well!

Five Months into a Great Year: Word on the Street — May 31st thru June 3rd

June 5th, 2011 COMMENTS
Five Months into a Great Year!

Word on the Street by Kevin Carty

Five Months into a Great Year!

So how have the first  months been for you and your company?

At the Classic Exhibits family of companies, I am delighted to report that 2011 has been different . . . and good . . . and surprising. And not just in terms of sales, but also in terms of product development and overall economic recovery.

In Q1, we posted our second largest quarter in the company’s history. A BIG thanks to our dedicated distributors for your sales efforts. You made it possible.

We had several real standout projects in the first five months that deserve a mention.

  • Comcast/Xfinity demonstrated our ability to design, build, and install a large retail interior project. For photos and a project history, see last week’s WOTS blog.
  • Boston Scientific was a great example of showing an old dog new tricks. 🙂 You would have been amazed to see the final project. We took an Intro Fabric Panel System and dressed it up with accessories normally seen on Visionary Designs Hybrid Systems.
  • Display Supply and Lighting’s EXHIBITOR 2011 exhibit. It’s probably my favorite display of the year to be honest. It really highlighted the use of TSP Profiles from ClassicMODUL, SEG fabric from Optima Graphics, and custom programmed LED lighting from Display Supply and Lighting. Take a look at the video we posted on our website. It is worth seeing (even if you’ve seen it before).
The Easy Button

Staple's Easy Button

And many, many more. In addition to the customized kits, there was a steady stream of standard and non-standard hybrids, an intriguing mix of modified counters and workstations, and then a rather bizarre mix of Aero Overhead and Freestanding projects. And, Aero Table Tops came back with a vengeance (you gotta love those high tech and medical companies).

I would be remiss if I did not acknowledge the amazing growth of Eco-systems Sustainable as well. Kudos to their whole team of course, but I would especially like to acknowledge the great design and marketing  by Michael McCord and Eric Albery. They really have helped to set Eco-systems apart from any of their competitors. Take a look at just one terrific example:  a very custom 10 x 10 for Google.

Exhibits Northwest Portland and Seattle have both seen a tremendous growth in 2011 as well. They started strong with CES in January by working with local companies and Classic distributors on new builds and rentals. But even beyond January, they have embraced new channels within their existing markets. The Comcast order by Tyler Poage and the Malarky order by Laura Magdalen are great examples.

Last but not least, ClassicMODUL. They started the year with the addition of a new Southeast Extrusion Depot (in Birmingham, AL).  Tom Jones, our CM guru, has really pushed hard to increase business in the retail and architectural markets. Not that ClassicMODUL is new to those markets by any means, but corporately we have been pushing to increase aluminum extrusion volume outside trade shows in 2011. Well done Tom!

As we head into June and July, traditionally slower sales months, all of the Classic companies plan to focus on the development of new products, services, and market opportunities. Often, it is the “unique” opportunities you bring us that guide us to develop those new products, service, and markets. So please don’t hesitate to bring new or unique ideas our way.

Thanks again for your support. On behalf of the entire Classic team, I hope you have a safe, enjoyable, and rewarding summer.

Be well!
