Words of Wisdom from My Grandmother

Words of Wisdom from My Grandmother

Words of Wisdom from My Grandmother

When I was eight years old, I sent a very belated thank you to my grandmother for a birthday gift. A few days later, she called. I apologized for taking so long to send the letter, but my grandmother, in typical grandmother fashion, said, “What’s important is that you took the time to think of me.” Now, if you knew my grandmother, you’d know that this lovely Hallmark moment was 80% sincere and 20% guilt. But that’s OK. Her comment has guided me ever since in my relationships with family, friends, and business associates.

We’re No Different

We’re no different than my grandmother. We want our friends, family, and acquaintances to think of us. We want them to ask about our lives, to send congratulations, and to remember important dates like our birthday and anniversary. No one is perfect, and no one expects you to be, but they do expect you to make a sincere effort.

In business, “Taking the Time” is a mindset. We all know it’s easier and less expensive to keep an existing customer than to acquire a new one. That fact has been drilled into our brain repeatedly. Yet, we devote most of our energy to chasing new customers or simply reacting to existing ones. What we rarely do is contact our existing customers. Put yourself in your customer’s shoes. When was the last time you called a customer for advice about a product or service? How often do you send out surveys asking for feedback? Do you ever phone a customer just to ask how they are doing without launching into a sales pitch?

Tips for a Successful Business Trip

Tips for a Successful Business Trip

Reid Sherwood, National Sales Manager

Starting in 2000, my primary job has been to travel around the country to meet with potential clients or to work with existing customers. For eight years, I worked for Optima Graphics and for the past year and a half, I have worked for Classic Exhibits/ClassicMODUL. Generally on my trips, I leave either on a Sunday evening or early Monday morning, fly to a city, and visit customers within the area (or within an hour or two of the city). I’ve always tried to schedule a mid-afternoon flight home on Friday so I was back by Friday evening. Ten years later (almost), I am a true road warrior and feel qualified to share these tips for a successful business trip.

Airlines and Airports. This may sound like a cliché, but the most important thing is a good start. That means NO DELAYS or excessive layovers on the outbound flight. I’ve learned to stick with one airline as my primary carrier. Two million airline miles later, American Airlines is my go-to airline. It’s great for some things . . . horrible for others. They have the best “loyalty” program of the major carriers. You get more miles, more upgrades, and more “favors” than the others. The downside is O’Hare. I’m based in Michigan and fly into O’Hare a lot. No airport in the world is capable of handling the two largest airlines as hubs (American and United). Chicago’s O’Hare is no exception. Weather is only one of the problems. The other is space for all the airplanes. Obviously, you can’t control the weather, the airlines, or mechanical problems. You simply hope for the best and cross your fingers.

Luggage. NOTHING is more frustrating than not having your luggage arrive, especially if you have product samples for your sales calls. I am convinced there is nothing you can do to totally prevent this situation (short of carrying on all your luggage), but there is something you can do to lessening the chances of your luggage getting lost. No matter what — DON’T SWITCH AIRLINES! For instance, don’t fly from Jacksonville, FL to LAX and switch from American Airlines to Delta in Cincinnati. I guarantee that something will happen, and your luggage will NEVER make the transfer. If you have to switch, ALWAYS stay on the same carrier.  All of this is just the pre-cursor to the crux of the trip – visiting your clients or potential clients. (more…)

Word on the Street — July 27th thru July 31st

Relax! Is It Really Feasible These Days?

Sort of a weird topic, right?

If you are like me, you work long hours, travel more than you should, and constantly have work on your mind. All the while, trying to balance your home life and the current world we live in. It can be hard!

Coming off a week in Chicago at TS2, I was slammed the first three days catching up on calls, emails, and orders — as well as doing as much show follow-up as possible. What made it even more critical was that I was leaving Thursday morning for a short vacation so I had to get everything done by Wednesday afternoon . . . theoretically!

So with that behind me, now it ‘s time to relax right? Easier said than done. How does one go from 100 to 0?

For me, I try to maintain a similar routine by waking up a little earlier, having a cup of coffee, and checking the computer. But I steer clear of work stuff as much as possible. This morning I opened the laptop at 7:00 am. I had 47 emails, mostly work related. Immediately, I shut off my email, threw the headphones on, and opted to re-watch Stage 20 from the Tour De France, Mt. Ventoux. It proved to be both relaxing and inspiring. Despite the temptation to respond to every email, I have to remind myself that my Out-of-Office is on so anyone who really wants an answer knows to call Classic or ClassicMODUL.

Ask my wife what relaxes me and she would laugh and tell you that it took several years for her to figure that out. But put some good music in my ears and a concert playing , a cycling re-run, or sometimes just looking through photos and I am at peace.

What about you? How do you break the cycle of the day to day stresses we all deal with? Please share your comments

Have a great and restful weekend

Be Well!

“New and Improved” ClassicMODUL Website

New and Improved ClassicMODUL Website

New and Improved ClassicMODUL Website

If you have ever created or revised a website, you know how stressful, painful, and expensive the process can be. Just gathering all the necessary data and storyboarding the pages can be overwhelming. Thank goodness, I’m not a programmer. Or a graphic designer. Or a project manager. They do all the work. I have the luxury of brainstorming and tossing out ideas and then moving far, far away while the messy stuff happens. But when it all comes together, it’s magic.

Introducing the “New and Improved” ClassicMODUL website (www.classicmodul.com). I’ll review the changes in just a second, but I should explain what is “ClassicMODUL” for anyone unfamiliar with this division of Classic Exhibits Inc. ClassicMODUL supplies aluminum extrusions and accessories to the trade show, retail, and museum trade. The distinction between Classic Exhibits and ClassicMODUL is a matter of degree. Classic Exhibits designs and builds trade show and event displays, complete with design support, setup drawings, custom packaging, and graphic specs. ClassicMODUL can supply all those, on an ala carte basis, but more often ClassicMODUL supplies cut extrusion, locks, and accessories to customers from CAD drawings or item lists.  Classic Exhibits works exclusively with trade show distributors. ClassicMODUL works with architectural firms, museum designers, retail designers, custom houses, and trade show distributors. If you explore the two websites for even a minute, the distinction is obvious.

Improvements to the ClassicMODUL website:

  1. By far, the BIG BIG BIG improvement is to the “Our Line” section. There are now detail drawings of every extrusion and accessory. The products are organized into categories, and you can download DXF files for each one. In addition, there is a new search tool so you can find exactly the item you want in a flash. There are several other upgrades in the “Our Line” section which I encourage you to review.
  2. We reformatted the Request a Catalog page, the Tech Specs page, and the About Us page. These pages are now much easier to navigate.
  3. We added a video which shows the MODUL island exhibit at EuroShop 2008. It’s an informative video, about three minutes long, showing the design capabilities of the MODUL extrusion system.

Finally, I’d like to take a moment to thank everyone who worked so hard on these website improvements. To Tom Jones and Lee Tillman at ClassicMODUL for reviewing the database and your additions. To Flying High Creative Resources for pulling together and organizing all the information and for project managing everything. To Netra for your exceptional programming expertise and creative problem solving. It takes a team — an exceptionally talented team. Thank you!

p.s. What are you waiting for? Another pat on the back. It’s time to start the next project. Chop! Chop!

ClassicMODUL Opens an East Coast Extrusion Facility

ClassicMODUL Aluminum Extrusions and Accessories

ClassicMODUL Aluminum Extrusions and Accessories

ClassicMODUL, a designer and manufacturer of aluminum extrusions and accessories, announces the opening of an East Coast facility. The Cheshire, CT manufacturing and warehouse facility will stock select aluminum extrusion profiles for exhibit houses, retail designers, and museum display builders. Aluminum profiles and accessories currently unavailable in Cheshire, CT will continue to ship from Portland, OR.  With the exception of metal bending, the East Coast facility can handle the manufacturing requests for these aluminum extrusions.

According to Kevin Carty, VP of Sales, “We are excited by this opportunity to better meet the needs of our clients on the East and West Coasts and anywhere in between. Now with locations in the NW and the NE, ClassicMODUL offers much greater shipping flexibility than any other aluminum extrusion supplier. Choosing the right aluminum profiles was important, and we want to thank our distributors for their feedback over the past nine months. We feel confident that we have chosen the right location and group of extrusions. However, this is just the start. We will continue to add profiles to the Cheshire facility based on our distributor’s feedback and demand.”

The ClassicMODUL product line includes over 200 aluminum extrusions and hundreds of accessories for the trade show, exhibition, and retail environments. MODUL products are available through Classic Exhibits and ClassicMODUL, Inc. Design expertise is also available. ClassicMODUL is a division of Classic Exhibits, a designer and manufacturer of portable, modular, hybrid, and custom displays.

For questions about availability or to place orders, contact Tom Jones at tjones@classicmodul.com or 866.864.8686. For more information about ClassicMODUL, go to www.classicmodul.com.
