I believe that our client relationships are far more important than any one project, and automatically charging rush fees is not conducive to good business.

I’ll share a quick comment I heard at EXHIBITOR, which both made me wince and smile. An unnamed executive at a portable/modular company said, “We’ve seen the economy improve because we are now able to impose rush fees much easier and to push back harder on requests for shorter turnaround times.”

While there’s nothing factually wrong with that comment (i.e., more business makes it more difficult for manufacturers to meet every distributor’s request), what it really said was, “The tide has turned, my little pretty, we are now back in the driver’s seat so don’t think you’re suddenly going to get everything you want.”

I would hope that we’ve learned to treat our relationships with customers and suppliers as partnerships over the past two years. Goodness knows, we relied heavily on one another to survive during the recession and that’s a lesson we should not forget too quickly.
